The Quaids Will Sue

Dennis Quaid tells the story of how his newborn twins almost died after being given a mistaken dose of medication last November.

Quaid's babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were hospitalized due to a suspected infection, and then mistakenly given an overdose of Heparin, which is a blood thinner normally given to adults.

"Our kids are bleeding from everyplace that they've punctured," says Quaid. "They were working on Boone, whose belly button would not stop bleeding - blood squirted across the room. It was blood everywhere. It was a life-and-death situation," Quaid describes in an interview that will air on 60 Minutes this Sunday.

Quaid and his wife Kimberly are suing Baxter International, the drug manufacturer.

Dennis Quaid's newborn twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace are in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai and fighting for their lives after they were given the wrong dose of Heparin.

They were supposed to only get 10 units, but they were given 10,000 instead. TMZ reports that a technician placed the medication in the wrong place and the babies' nurse grabbed it without checking the dosage. Both babies began to "bleed out" late Sunday.
They are apparently being given Protamine to reverse the effects. They are in stable condition. TMZ also reports that 13 other patients were given the wrong dose as well.
The twins were born on November 8th by surrogate.
